In addition to creating an audiobook for an additional fee, clients have the option to purchase four other types of additional services: editing, graphic design, translation, and expedited processing, and publicity/marketing. All the details related to any additional costs are clearly defined in advance based on what a client wants, and the scope of the work becomes part of a contract between
Byblio Press
and a client. Authors who want their book written with spellings that reflect UK English must indicate this as a special request in their initial proposal; this option does not require an additional charge.
Publishing with Byblio Press includes basic proofreading to identify and correct any obvious errors and typos. However, we do not edit manuscripts for their content or style. Most authors want their manuscript to undergo a deeper analysis to ensure the final version of the book is of high quality.
Byblio Press offers four types of editing for an additional fee.* The cost of professional editing varies because it depends on many factors. Prices are based on the level of experience an editor has, where they are located, the length of the book, the type of editing required, the type of genre, and the timeline for publishing the book (if you need a long document edited quickly, you will pay a higher price).
(substantive editing, also known as rewriting) is the most expensive and requires an experienced native English writer to make extensive changes. It focuses on the content, style, and language used within a manuscript, how sections can be improved, inconsistencies in style, and the overuse of certain words or phrases. It also looks at the sentences and words used in each paragraph and suggests changes to make the text more concise. In most cases, we do not accept manuscripts that need this type of editing (well-written books usually don’t require this type of editing), but exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis.
is the last step of editing process. It checks for spelling errors and format inconsistencies, both before a manuscript is submitted to produce the version of the book that will be printed, and a review of the book’s final layout to ensure typesetting was done correctly.
focuses on the clarity and readability of the text as well its flow, grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation. This type of editing takes place after content editing has taken place (if it’s done).
is a process in which key terms from the body of the manuscript are placed in an appendix at the end of the book, and the location (either chapter or page) are noted. Ideally, the author has already created an index so this step is not needed. Nevertheless, we will create an index when the author provides a list of words that are to be included in the index. If the page number will be listed, the creation of the index occurs after the interior of the book is finalized in the production phase. This extends the amount of time needed to publish the book.
* Other types of editing exist but are not offered by Byblio Press. Developmental and evaluative editing look at the overall structure, organization, and style of a book and provide an overall critique of its contents and flow for use by authors to improve their work. Fact checking looks at the accuracy of what is written and may require a review by somebody with expertise in the topic.
Byblio Press charges clients based on the number of words that must be edited, and the rate reflects a sliding scale — it decreases as the number of words increases. For example, for a book with 35,000 words that needs copy editing and proofreading, a client will pay $1,295 for these two additional services. A book with 100,000 words with these two types of editing will cost a client $3,100, a 16% discount per word. Most of the time, each type of editing is completed in 2–3 weeks. Longer manuscripts may take longer to edit (see Expedited Processing below). The cost to create an Index depends on how the index is structured and the number of words it includes.
Clients may request or decline these extra services. All the details related to any additional editing costs are clearly defined in advance and become part of the contract between the client and
Byblio Press. The price of our editing services is similar to what other editing services charge. The quality of the writing in manuscripts submitted to us helps determine whether we will accept the manuscript for publication — better written books are more likely to be accepted. So, clients may want to explore other editing options before submitting their manuscript to us.
Most authors identify or develop pictures, drawings, illustrations, and maps that will be used in the book and on its covers. However, authors may purchase graphic design services that apply to the development of new illustrations and maps and the selection of pictures or figures that will be used in the book or on the cover. This service can also relate to additional work for the layout of the book’s contents, especially if there are many illustrations and pictures. The cost of these services depends on the quantity, quality, and complexity of what the author desires. We will consult with the author to determine how much we will do and what the cost will be.
Translation services may be purchased by authors who want their book published in a language other than English. The cost of the translation depends on the book’s length, the language, and the availability of the independent reviewer. In most cases, the cost is a flat fee of $0.06 a word (e.g., translating a manuscript with 60,000 words will cost $3,600). This covers an initial translation and an independent review by a fluent writer of the language in order to ensure the accuracy of the translation.
Byblio Press can translate a book into 50 commonly used languages, although the availability of a fluent writer who can independently check the accuracy of the translation can lengthen the amount of time it takes to complete the translation.
Once a book has been translated into another language, Byblio creates it as an e-book, and it can also be made into an audiobook at that time.
A manuscript that requires a faster timeline than usual requires a higher rate of payment. The increased cost is related to how much faster the editing process must occur. The fastest process is half (50%) of the normal time. For example, the cost to edit a document that would normally take two weeks to complete will incur a payment that is 50% higher to complete the editing process in one week (50% faster). However, since authors must review and approve the work of the editors before the next step in the process occurs, there can be delays in the amount of time it takes to publish a book.
Once a book is published, authors may start receiving calls and emails from people who say the book is great and they work for companies that will help sell the book or present it to traditional publishers or movie representatives. Be very wary of these people. Nearly all of them are predatory and unscrupulous. They will overpromise and offer expensive services that are not cost-effective, if they do anything at all -- their pitch is often part of a scam, and they want payment before any services are provided. (For more information about these scams and their techniques, see Resources, Marketing Your Book.)
Byblio Press provides authors various ways to promote their books to retailers, bookstores, libraries, targeted audiences, and the general public. We automatically create a press release and video for all our books at no extra charge, but some authors want to take advantage of a range of our other promotional activities to help sell the book. We know a book will not sell, even when it’s well written on an interesting topic, if others don’t know about it.
A few weeks before a book is published, we contact the author to explain these optional services. Here are some ways we can help promote the book we publish.

The cost of these and other optional services depends on the scope and duration of the efforts. We discuss all the options and costs with authors who want to explore these possible activities.
However, we do not guarantee book sales or royalties.
We want to know your exact needs so that we can provide the perfect solution. Let us know what you want and we’ll do our best to help.
